Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be held from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM on June 16, 2007, in Room 711 at Upper Moreland Middle School on Orangeman's Road in Hatboro, PA. Guest SIG leader Frank Stepanski will be giving a presentation on WordPress. What it is, how it can be used, how to set it up, and how you can customize how it can look on the web.

Last Meeting: There was no meeting in May.

The Database Special Interest Group is devoted to learning about, discussing, analyzing and troubleshooting databases. Which specific databases are discussed depends on the interests of the members, although much of the discussion centers around issues which are common to all or most databases.

We are using Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL, Second or Third Edition by Kevin Yank, SitePoint Pty Ltd 2003 (ISBN 0957921810) or 2004 (ISBN 0975240218) as a text and will be collaborating on real-life database-backed web projects at our project site as we go through the book. We will focus on database aspects in Database SIG, whereas Web Design SIG will focus on frontend/web design aspects. Please note that the first 4 chapters of Yank's book are available for free on the internet at sitepoint.com and mysql.com, plus there is also a November 2001 tutorial by the author on the same subject at zend.com.

Previously, we covered Michael J. Hernandez's book, Database Design for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design (Addison-Wesley, 1997, ISBN 0201694719), or the second edition (2003, ISBN 0201752840) as a text, although no advance reading is required to attend SIG meetings. However, I recommend this book (either 1st or 2nd edition) highly to anyone interested in working with or designing databases, as it is an excellent introduction for the beginner and a sound, useful review of the basics for the more experienced among us.

The Database SIG is an interactive SIG: In addition to discussion touched off by the book, several members have brought their databases in for presentation, critique, and help from other SIG members in live demos. I encourage anyone reading this webpage or attending the SIG in person to submit their own ideas for future topics.

Please feel free to e-mail me at the link below or speak to me in person with your great ideas for the Database SIG!
